A leading podcaster on pharmaceutical subjects, a prolific writer of books (“My goal is one book a year”), and a full-time consultant, Albert takes multitasking seriously. She also finds time for speaking engagements and for leading and growing not-for-profits.
Rising up: A bachelor’s in pharmacy from Butler University, an MBA in marketing from Concordia University, a doctor of pharmacy degree from Shenandoah University, and a law degree from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law were interspersed with jobs at Centocor and Merck and a decade teaching at Butler University. While still teaching, she joined the Myers and Stauffer accounting firm, where she worked with state Medicaid programs. Albert thought it would be a part-time gig. “I wound up with two full-time jobs and had to pick one,” she said. She chose M&S.
Transitional moment: “When I was handed a pink slip in my late 20s and the company I worked for closed its doors two weeks later,” she said. “That taught me a very valuable lesson: that jobs are fragile and to not have all my career eggs in one basket.”
Mentor: “Everyone who enters my life has something to teach me … for not so good, or for good.”
Givebacks: Albert serves as chapter president for the Indiana chapter of the Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association, which, she said, “is all about getting more women leading. I’m personally passionate about seeing more women and girls in STEM. … I want to see the health care and life science community more connected. We get a third of our members from Lilly and a third from Roche, but what’s interesting is the other third, which can be someone working at a PR or accounting firm. If we can get all of us in a room exchanging ideas, I think there are tremendous opportunities. I love bringing the cast together and letting them create the play.” Under her guidance, the chapter had sold-out programming and the highest percentage of new members among all legacy chapters. She also is co-chairwoman of pharmacy law educators for the American Society for Pharmacy Law’s National Advisory Board and a member of Women & Hi Tech. “I try not to take on more than three nonprofits a year. Any more and I can’t serve to the best of my ability.”
Inspiring quote: “Toni Morrison said that if she wants to read a book but can’t find it, that’s her cue from the universe that the book needs to be written. That has inspired me to write or co-write the 13 books I’ve been lucky enough to publish thus far.”
Favorite place in central Indiana: Lawrence library. “Books, someone said, are portable magic.”
