Gas prices have topped $2.70 per gallon in recent days, although drivers could get a better deal at this station at 2304 Madison Ave. (IBJ photo/Lesley Weidenbener)The average price of regular gasoline in Indiana has topped $2.70 for several days, about 8 percent higher than the national average, which has been hovering around $2.50, according to AAA.
The motor club reported that Indiana had the nation’s sixth-highest week-over-week boost in prices at the pump—about 14 cents per gallon—for the week ending Nov. 3. Among Great Lakes and central-region states, only Illinois had higher prices.
Current gas costs are also significantly higher than one year ago, when Indiana prices were about $2.12 per gallon, 10 cents less than the national average.
Prices are up in part because demand is high. The Energy Information Administration reports that consumers bought more gas last month than in any October since 2006.
“October has seen strong demand numbers likely, in part, due to consumers taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather rather than spending time indoors,” AAA spokeswoman Jeanette Casselano said in a statement.
“As consumers fill up their tanks more frequently, we are seeing supply levels tighten and gas prices increase. However, we don’t expect this increase to be long-term.”•
