In regard to the story “Alcohol panel irked by lobbying deal but backs Sunday sale” by the AP [Nov. 20], I agree with Beverly Gard, who leads the Alcohol Revision Commission. The story stated “she was bothered” by the lobbyists’ announcement. I find it suspicious that the Indiana Association of Beverage Retailers and the Indiana Retail Council all of a sudden agree to allow Sunday retail sales—but they agree not to allow convenience and grocery stores to sell cold beer.
It has been a well-known fact that Indiana lawmakers have received more contributions from liquor store interests for many years. And I’m sure the package liquor stores will up their donations to lawmakers to get what they want. Liquor store owners don’t want to open their stores on Sunday and have to pay their workers. Sure, they are bound to lose revenue but they’ve been riding this free train way too long. It’s time for Indiana to come into the 21st century and eliminate the ban on Sunday alcohol sales and include cold beer sales in convenience and grocery stores.
Unfortunately, it always comes down to money, not what the people of Indiana want. I suggest we vote for the lawmakers who don’t take the liquor store money—if there are any left.
