American United Life signboard sometime between 1958 and 1994

Like most downtown commuters, I have enjoyed the quips on the AUL/OneAmerica signboard for many years when either coming downtown on Capitol Avenue or going home on Illinois Street. They provide a good laugh while wrestling with rush hour traffic. Here are some of my favorites:

To be the toast of the town you need a lot of bread.

All you can do on a shoestring today is trip.

Trashmen pick up junk, postmen deliver it.

Gossip: Mouth-to-mouth recitation.

Marven Lasky, a friend from a bygone era, displayed on his desk a miniature billboard that was given to him by AUL commemorating his quip: Many Japanese have the yen to travel.

I wanted a miniature billboard, too. I tried, “Pauper’s funeral: dead giveaway.” It was rejected.

Here’s one to send to Mayor Hogsett: A chuckhole is no chuckle.

I am going to try again with this suggestion: Would a gutter ball be an alley oops?

If you want to try your luck, send your submission to: Corporate Communications, OneAmerica, P.O. Box 368, Indianapolis, IN 46206-0368 or submit via the website, www.oneamerica.com.

As a tribute to OneAmerica’s longstanding tradition, I offer a crossword puzzle that contains a quip that was on last month’s board. It is a play on words, the kind of puzzle I really enjoy. Hope you like it.•
