Subscribe NowPeabody Indiana Services LLC notified the Indiana Department of Workforce Development on Monday that it will close its surface mine operations at Francisco in southwestern Indiana, putting about 80 employees out of work.
The division of St. Louis-based coal company Peabody Energy said it expects the mine to close between Nov. 23 and Dec. 6. About 50 workers will continue to work at the site’s preparation facility.
Peabody operates 30 surface and underground mines worldwide, including nine in Indiana. An underground mine also exists in Francisco, which is about 30 miles north of Evansville.
