After being forced out of an earlier company he had founded, Homer Capehart (better known in political circles for serving nearly two decades in the U.S. Senate) launched the Packard Manufacturing Co., which developed a mechanism for automatic record changing. Packard sold the technology to Wurlitzer, which later bought the entire Packard company. This photo was taken Nov. 30, 1945, in Packard’s Indianapolis factory in the 2900 block of Columbia Avenue where workers made jukeboxes. Capehart is sometimes referred to as the father of the jukebox industry.
