An outdoor New Year's Eve event in Indianapolis that attracted 40,000 people just two years ago has been scratched.

Not-for-profit organizer Downtown Indy cited higher costs for lighting, heating, security and sound equipment for canceling what would have been the fifth annual civic celebration of New Year's Eve on downtown's Georgia Street, TV station WRTV reported.

Bob Schultz, senior vice president of marketing and events for Downtown Indy, said it wouldn't be "prudent" for the group to put the event together this year.

The event last year was held amid temperatures around zero and attracted only 5,000 to 6,000 people. It was cut short. Downtown Indy said weather was another concern this year.

There will be other Indianapolis events, including a family New Year's Eve at the Indiana State Museum and a masquerade ball at Union Station.
