Subscribe NowIn Greg Kempf’s Viewpoint column [U.S. House carbon proposal deserves support, Dec. 14], he highlights some of the benefits of the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act recently introduced into Congress. Its main purpose is to significantly reduce carbon emissions by speeding implementation of alternatives to fossil fuels. In addition, it is such an elegant bill that it also adds millions of jobs and improves the economy at the same time. With recent reports showing renewable energy jobs across Indiana and the nation already booming, this keeps job growth strong for years to come.
Kempf failed to point out some other important features: the act is bipartisan in nature, with two Republican and three Democrat House original sponsors and one of each in the Senate. Fossil-fuel use intended for crops is exempt from paying the fee. Perhaps the best feature of the act is that the proceeds of the carbon fees go back to families every month to pay for the added costs. Most families will receive more than they project to spend on increased costs.
At a time when partisan politics runs rampant, it’s a breath of fresh air to see cooperation on something so important. I call on Rep. Susan Brooks to support this bill and highly recommend everyone do the same.
