The team announced Thursday it has promoted radio broadcaster Matt Taylor to full-time play-by-play announcer for Colts broadcasts, after he served in the post on an interim basis during the 2018 season.
Taylor joined the Colts in 2012 as manager of radio production. He since has served as a sportscaster, sideline reporter and producer for various Colts broadcasts and programming.
He moved into the play-by-play spot early last season after the abrupt resignation of longtime radio voice Bob Lamey.
Lamey, who held the job for 31 seasons, later acknowledged using “an inappropriate word” when telling a story in the week before his resignation about former IndyCar driver and WISH-TV reporter Derek Daly. The word reportedly was an ethnic slur.
Taylor did not address taking up Lamey’s mantle in a statement released by the Colts, but called the hire an “incredible honor and opportunity.”
“I love everything about Indianapolis, radio, football and the Colts,” he said. Those things combined make this a dream position for me. … I’m beyond excited to help enhance the game day experience for Colts fans and share in future great moments.”
Taylor also continues to manage the Colts Radio Network in his new role. Prior to the 2018 season, he had been the team’s radio sideline reporter for five seasons.
Roger VanDerSnick, chief sales and marketing officer for the Colts, praised Taylor.
“Matt has done an excellent job delivering an exciting and informative broadcast, along with news and information throughout the week on our various platforms,” he said. “His preparation and knowledge of the Colts coupled with his breadth of experience in Indiana sports broadcasting makes him a great choice to continue this Colts legacy.”
