Deflating the Dome

Demolition crews will begin letting air out of the RCA Dome as early as next spring. Deflating and removing the Dome’s fabric roof is the first step of a five-month demolition process, which officials explained today at a meeting of the Indiana Stadium and Convention Building Authority. Crews will use traditional demolition methods, such as wrecking balls and bulldozers, to slowly raze the structure starting at the north end. Before demolition ends, other crews will begin work on a $275-million expansion of the Indiana Convention Center. The project requires the removal of about 250,000 tons of debris. The convention center expansion should open by Fall 2010.
