Indianapolis was one of the first cities to sell naming rights for sports venues when RCA in 1994 was allowed to pay $10 million to puts its name on the Hoosier Dome.
The dome has been demolished and the Colts have moved across the street to their new home in Lucas Oil Stadium, which cost Lucas Oil Co. $121.5 million to attach its name to for 20 years.
Now Indianapolis officials are considering selling naming rights for other city properties.
As IBJ reporter Anthony Schoettle learned for a story this weekend, the city is talking with ad agencies in the hope of raising at least $500,000 in the first year. Imagine corporate names on everything from bus shelters to city-owned buildings.
The city obviously is looking for new revenue. Pat Andrews, vice president of the Marion County Alliance of Neighborhood Associations, described the idea with a different word: “prostitution.”
