Expect to hear an official announcement soon that the Phoenix Theatre will be extending its run of the musical "Spring Awakening. Looks like it will be playing at least through Oct. 31.
And that's not all. The hit production of "Avenue Q" at the Phoenix will be returning to fill a previously empty April-May slot in the schedule.
While audiences shouldn't expect to see "Mame" or "Cats" in future Phoenix lineups, it's clear that there's a responsive audience here for edgier musicals. (Long-time Phoenix watchers may remembers its productions of such shows as "Bat Boy," "Urinetown," and "Hedwig and the Angry Inch.")
See my comments on "Avenue Q" here and "Spring Awakening" here.
