New restaurants: The End, Chef Joseph’s, Cafe Audrey, Flying Cupcake, La Margarita

A new restaurant called The End of the Line Public House, or simply The End, is set to replace Shelbi Street Cafe & Bistro in the Fountain Square Theatre building. The End will feature a gastropub-style menu and one of the city's largest selections of local beers. The neighborhood was once known as "The End" because the intersection of Virginia Avenue and Shelby and Prospect Streets was used as a turnaround for streetcars. Building owners Fern and Linton Calvert plan to reopen the restaurant on Dec. 2, after a two-week renovation. The restaurant's walls will be adorned with photographs of streetcars from the Bass Photo collection and the Indiana Historical Society. The plans call for 14 taps dedicated to offerings from local breweries including Fountain Square Brewing Company, Sun King Brewing, Flat 12 Bierwerks, Triton Brewing Company and more. The menu will feature some holdovers from the Shelbi Street Cafe, along with new offerings including baked pretzel sticks with beer cheese, glazed Denver-style lamb ribs, Blazin' Asian Chicken and a baked Brie and Fuji apple sandwich. • Chef Joseph's at The Connoisseur Room, a "world fusion" restaurant from Chef Joseph Heidenreich, has opened at 115 E. Ohio St. downtown. The restaurant offers a fine-dining lunch menu and is available for special events and private dining. The menu will change bi-weekly, "to ensure a varied and eclectic dining experience." The space features walnut paneling, exposed brick walls, a two-story wine cellar, baby grand piano and a private boardroom.
• The Flying Cupcake Bakery is growing again with plans for a fourth location, at the Rivers Edge shopping center at 82nd Street and Dean Road. The new shop, scheduled to open in February, will offer free wifi, Hubbard and Cravens coffee and a rotation of more than 30 cupcake varieties including the Red Velvet Elvis and Happy Birthday to Me.
• Cafe Audrey at the Fort, a new independent breakfast and lunch spot, has opened at 9134 Otis Ave. just northeast of 56th Street and Post Road. The restaurant, which is closed Mondays, is owned by Tammy Cunningham and named for her mother. Its menu features breakfast served all day and "geniune broaster chicken."
• La Margarita, the independent northside Mexican restaurant, has opened its second location, in Fountain Square's Murphy Arts Center. The goal of proprietors Jon Carlos Rangel (and his mother, Lori) was to create a similar atmosphere to the original Mexican restaurant his father established in the 1980s in Broad Ripple. • Harry & Izzy's has opened its new restaurant in the renovated Rivers Edge shopping center at 82nd Street and Dean Road, in a spot between Nordstrom Rack and The Container Store. It features a two-story wine cellar that holds 2,700 bottles. An earlier post is here.
