A&E priorities for May 30-June 5: Urbanski, ‘Zanna,’ gospel brunch and more

Urbanski Conducts Gershwin

May 31-June 1

Hilbert Circle Theatre

The show is billed as a Gershwin celebration—and with “Rhapsody in Blue” and “An American in Paris” on the menu, that stands to reason. But the program also includes Leonard Bernstein’s rousing “Overture to Candide” and the world premiere of William Bolcom’s “Games and Challenges: Something Wonderful Right Away,” written for the ISO’s strings-in-residence trio, Time for Three. It could be the most eclectic—and one of the most pleasing—concerts of the season. Details here.

“Zanna Don’t!”

May 31-June 29

Theater on the Square

In a contemporary musical-theater world where edge is a prime virtue, the most shocking thing about “Zanna Don’t!” isn’t its subject matter but its goofy gentility. In a world where gay relationships are the norm, the hunky head of the chess team at Heartsville High writes a shocking play about heterosexuals in the military and the love that dare not speak its name occurs between a boy … and a girl! All of this is overseen by Zanna, a spirited matchmaker who puts his own love life on the back burner. The tuneful off-Broadway show has had an extended life in regional theaters, getting its local premiere courtesy of Theatre on the Square. Details here.

House of Blues Gospel Brunch

June 2

Old National Center’s Egyptian Room

After a sold-out Mother’s Day event, the House of Blues Gospel Brunch returns for more. This time, the all-you-can-eat food (biscuits and gravy, omelets, shrimp, etc.) and music program features Rodnie Bryant, founder and director of the Christian Community Mass Choir. Details here.
