Indiana State Museum is expected to announce details today about a major traveling exhibit on corn that will debut locally in August 2009. Museum employees have developed content for the $1 million-plus show, which eventually will travel to other museums in exchange for a fee.

The show will map corn’s evolution and hybridization and the history of its uses, from food to ethanol. National sponsors include Dow AgroSciences LLC, Ford Motor Company Fund, National Starch Food Innovation and Case IH North America. Brock Grain Bins, based in the north-central town of Milford, is a local sponsor.

“Corn is obviously big news in Indiana, but it is big news in a lot of places,” Indiana State Museum Director Barry Dressel told IBJ in August. “It started off hundreds of years ago as a really very different plant and now it’s grown all over the world. It’s a miracle plant.”

While the museum has produced other shows, including one on quilts that traveled to California and Japan, the Corn exhibit will be its largest undertaking. A curator has worked on the content for the show for five years and the museum has preliminary design drafts. It’s likely contractors will be hired to finalize the design and build the exhibit.
