Here are some of the main events to look forward to this week.

Indy Jazz Fest

Hometown hero Josh Kaufman, who emerged victorious on TV’s “The Voice,” will headline an Indy Jazz Fest show at the Murat Theatre Sept. 13. The rest of the schedule includes funk/soul saxophonist Maceo Parker at the Madame Walker Theatre Sept. 12, SNL trombonist Steve Turre Sept. 14 at Indiana Landmarks Center, Rob Dixon Sept. 17 at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, and vocalist Sara Gazarek at the Cabaret at the Columbia Club Sept. 12-13. Kevin Kline

The Indiana University Cinema calendar this month includes “Silverado,” “The Ice Storm” and “Dave,” with the common denominator being former IU student Kevin Kline. Kline will be in town to score an honorary degree and speak at the IU Auditorium at the free Jorgensen Guest Filmmaker Lecture (tickets required) in conversation with Jonathan Michaelson, chairman of the Department of Theatre, Drama and Contemporary Dance. Joining the festivities will be Robby Benson and Karla DeVito, who performed with Kline in Broadway’s “The Pirates of Penzance.” Kline is also scheduled to pop in on a screening of “A Fish Called Wanda” and participate in a Q&A session. “The Two Gentlemen of Verona”

Even if you’ve never seen “Two Gents,” its elements may be familiar. It’s got betrayal, repentance, a wisenheimer servant, couples reunited and a woman disguising herself as a man. In other words, it’s a Shakespearian comedy. The cast includes local favorites Ryan Artzberger, Robert Neal and Scot Greenwell. But expect the loudest applause to go to whatever pooch is found to play Crab, faithful canine pal to the servant Launce. Sept. 16-19 Indiana Repertory Theatre Details

“My Fair Lady”

For those who weren’t around when the original cast recording album of “My Fair Lady” was released, this might be a little hard to believe, but the disc spent 15 weeks atop the Billboard album charts over four years and was the biggest selling album of 1957 and 1958. Jazz performers offered variations on the Lerner & Lowe score (including “‘My Fair Lady’ Goes Latin” by Tito Puente). Cover artists—including Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand and Kermit the Frog—have tried their hands at its songs. And now two Actors Theatre of Indiana newcomers, Ball State University grad Erin Oechsel and Off-Broadway vet Doug Trapp, have the honors of rendering these now-familiar songs in the context of one of the wittiest scripts ever written for a Broadway show. Actors Theatre of Indiana’s production, which also includes local vets Paul Hansen and Darrin Murrell, promises an intimate version with a cast of 10. Sept. 17-28 Studio Theatre Details

Also this week

The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra opens the doors of Hilbert Circle theatre for a free Community Day open house on Sept. 13. It’s followed by an Opening Night Gala Sept. 14 featuring pianist Jeremy Denk.

Conner Prairie’s Festival of Machines, Sept. 13-14, features vehicle collectors’ exhibits, races and interactive opportunities.

The Elders, Tom Sweeney, The Kells, Hogeye Navvy, and the University of Notre Dame Marching Band are among the performers at the Indy Irish Festival, Sept. 12-14 at Military Park.

Oranje, the contemporary art and music festival, returns to the Indiana State Fairgrounds Sept. 13.

Toby Keith tops a concert at Klipsch Music Center Sept. 13 that also includes Colt Ford and Krystal Keith.

The free Dawn or Doom film festival at Purdue University Sept. 15-18 includes screenings of “Inception,” “Jurassic Park,” “Gattica,” “Tron” and others.

Fountain Fest, Sept. 13 at Garfield Park, celebrates the built-in-1916 mainstay in Indy’s oldest city park. Performers include Cathy Morris and The Filter Kings.

On Sept. 14, Carmel PorchFest brings 43 live music acts to porches in the northwest quadrant of the city

Raymond Leppard opens the University of Indianapolis concert season at the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center by leading a performance that includes UIndy’s Festival Orchestra and choral ensembles, along with faculty soloists.

Former White House counsel Fred Fielding speaks at a benefit for the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site Sept. 11.

Poet Tracy K. Smith reads at Butler University’s Atherton Union Sept. 17.

Theatre on the Square presents Tom Firth’s comedy “Calendar Girls” Sept. 12-Oct. 11.
