A&E priority list includes Sutton Foster at the Cabaret, a Coltrane tribute, more

In an effort to give you more of a jump on the weekend, I’ll be posting my IBJ A&E priority list earlier in the week from here out. Look for it at Mondays at IBJ.com/arts.

For Jan. 19-25, consider the following options:

Sutton Foster

Loyal readers have heard me rave about Foster before, whether for her Broadway performances (recently starring in “Violet," her Palladium benefit for Actors Theatre of Indiana or her masterful master classes taught at Ball State, where she’s become something of a den mother to aspiring musical theater performers. This weekend, she’ll be tagging along with the most recent batch of those students for a program of Gershwin music at the Cabaret on Friday, Jan. 23, then performing her own shows on Saturday and Sunday. Stanley Clarke Trio

The former Return to Forever  member has a wide-ranging career that has included composing the scores for the movies “Boys n the Hood” and Poetic Justice as well as TV’s “Pee-wee’s Playhouse.” His home base, though, is jazz, with more than 20 studio albums and a batch of live recordings to his credit. “Scheherazade”

The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s new 317 series takes concerts beyond downtown. This time, Krzysztof Urbanski conducts music by Prokofiev, Khachaturian, and Rimsky-Korsakov with guest violinist Philippe Quint on Sunday, Jan. 25, at Avon High School. For those who prefer the ISO home base, Friday and Saturday evening concerts take place on the Circle. The weekend launches the ISO’s “Fantasy, Fate and War: A Midwinter Russian Music Festival,” which continues over the next two weekends. Details here. "The Illusionists"

On the one hand, having a magic show as part of the Broadway in Indianapolis series may seem a bit of a stretch. On the other hand, this seven-magician show did play Broadway (The New York Times reviewer found "the Manipulator" Yu Ho-Jin to be the best of the bunch). And with video projections, a live band, costumed dancers, and more, its production values should be higher than your average bus-and-truck tour. Details here.

Jan. 20-25. Old National Centre

“A Love Supreme”

The Jazz Kitchen and Indy Jazz Fest celebrate the 50^th anniversary of the recording of the landmark John Coltrane album “A Love Supreme” with a performance. Talent on the lineup includes saxophonist Rob Dixon and his quintet–Wayne Wallace, Steve Allee, Jim Anderson, and Steve Houghton. Details here.
