Roundup: Daredevil opens in Speedway; Penn & Palate downtown

Here's the latest news of fledgling breweries and eateries trying to tempt early-summer tastebuds, plus other retail projects:

• Daredevil Brewing Co. opens its tap room to the public on Wednesday. Shelbyville-based Daredevil invested $3 million in the construction of the 10,000-square-foot microbrewery at 1151 Main St. It joins a number of new projects on Main Street as Speedway town officials encourage a revitalization of the thoroughfare.

Daredevil was founded three years ago by Bill Ballinger and brothers Michael Pearson and Shane Pearson.

• Deer Creek Brewery has filed plans to open a production facility and tap room in 12,600 square feet at 17661 Cumberland Road in Noblesville, near the intersection of state roads 32 and 37.

• Penn & Palate opened June 4 on the ground floor of the Picadilly building at the northwest corner of East 16th and Pennsylvania streets. Penn & Palate owners John and Kim Robinson also operate The Legend Classic Irvington Cafe, a staple on the city's east side. The East 16th Street corridor is in the midst of a renaissance, with the Tinker Street restaurant at 402 E. 16th St. opening in January and several commercial projects in the planning stages.

Penn & Palate is a casual-dining restaurant focusing on modern comfort food. Its name is a winking reference to paint palettes, as the Herron Art School once was located across Pennsylvania Street.

• Strumento, a downtown art supply store, opened Friday on the second floor of the Art Bank art gallery at 811 Massachusetts Ave.

Strumento stocks various art supplies and can order specific materials upon request. The store is operated by Art Bank owners Gina Soo Golden and Brendon Entwistle.

• Project Pie opened June 1 at 8235 E. 96th St. in an outlot in front of Meijer. The location is the first in central Indiana for the Carlsbad, California chain. Local franchisee Luke Angermeier has signed a deal to open five stores in the next four years.

• Gandolfo’s New York Delicatessen continues to expand in the metropolitan area. The sandwich shop has agreed to occupy roughly 2,000 square feet at 2796 E. 146th St. at Cool Creek Village in Carmel.

The Salt Lake City-based deli filed plans last month to open at Anson Marketplace on Whitestown Parkway west of Zionsville. It also has locations in downtown’s CityWay development, in addition to Greenwood and Noblesville.

• McAlister's Deli has filed plans to build a 5,196-square-foot restaurant at 211 W. Northfield Drive in Brownsburg, south of Interstate 74 near a Walmart Supercenter. The Alpharetta, Georgia chain has 12 locations in the Indianapolis area.
 
• Johnny Rockets in Greenwood Park Mall has closed.
