The Indianapolis Colts are set to break ground next month on a $3.2 million expansion of their 56th Street training complex on the city’s northwest side.

Fishers-based Meyer-Najem Construction Co. has been hired as general contractor on the project. Meyer-Najem’s other notable projects include Kokomo’s new $9 million baseball stadium, Noblesville City Hall and Indiana University’s Hutton Hall.

Construction fences were set up and utility lines were moved recently in preparation for the project, which will take five months to complete.

The 7,500-square-foot expansion includes an indoor swimming pool, additional administrative space, and a lobby expansion.

“We just need a little more office and meeting space, and the pool is a rehabilitation and therapy pool for the players,” said Colts Chief Operating Officer Pete Ward.

Currently, the Colts players use a smaller Swimex pool for rehabilitating and training players, Ward said.

The 30-year-old facility, now called the Indiana Farm Bureau Football Center, has undergone several expansions, including one in 2010 that added several putting greens. (They’re used to help players relax and also for youth clinics and other activities.) During one of the previous expansions, the lobby area was shrunk to make way for additional office space.

With the recent expansion, Ward noted there isn't much more room to expand at the current training complex.
