Mayor Greg Ballard this morning announced his leadership team for the 2012 Super Bowl bid but said the city will review the National Football League’s requirements before making a final decision whether to bid.

Bids are due April 1. Ballard said a final decision about the bid will be announced by mid-February.

Despite the hedging, Ballard said he thinks Indianapolis will win the 2012 game.

“As you all know, I go in to win. I intend to win this time,” he said.
Central Indiana Corporate Partnership President Mark Miles will lead the effort and said the city’s indecision shouldn’t hurt its chances if it decides to try to land the game.

“It makes all the sense in the world just to make sure that … all the right pieces can be put into place in a timely way,” Miles said.

Miles and five others will be traveling this weekend to Phoenix, where the NFL will host an orientation for cities wanting to bid for the 2012 game. The city is hosting Sunday’s Super Bowl.

Eli Lilly and Co. President John Lechleiter would again lead fundraising efforts. He said the goal is to raise $25 million from businesses-the same total raised for last year’s Super Bowl bid. Lechleiter said the amount might increase if the team’s review of bid requirements shows that more money will be needed.
