UnitedHealthcare has signed a three-year contract with the Indiana Orthopaedic Hospital, bringing the specialty hospital into UnitedHealthcare’s central Indiana network of health care providers.

The contract, announced today, took effect on Feb. 1. It gives the orthopedic hospital “in-network” status, which typically means bigger discounts for UnitedHealthcare customers.

OrthoIndy, a group of more 60 orthopedic physicians, owns the hospital, located at West 86th Street and Interstate 465. Opened in 2005, the facility boasts 37 patient rooms, 10 operating suites, an imaging center and a pharmacy.

In the last five years, Minnesota-based UnitedHealthcare has been trying to add more providers to its network and more customers to its rolls. Health insurance in central Indiana is dominated by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, which claims roughly 60 percent of all commercial insurance customers.

UnitedHealthcare has contracts with nearly 9,500 physicians and 130 hospitals throughout Indiana. As of December, UnitedHealthcare claimed more than 373,000 commercial customers in Indiana. It also serves another 124,000 Medicare enrollees in the state.
