The pharmaceutical maker’s first Global Day of Service will involve 8,400 workers’ delving into projects that include planting trees, clearing weeds from parks and framing Habitat for Humanity houses.
Some of the workers will attempt to set a Guinness world record by painting a stretch of wall along Madison Avenue between Raymond and Terrace streets. Counting that mural and two other paint-by-number projects planned for the Monon Trail and Manual High School baseball field, the total will come to a half-mile.
“It’s continuing the Lilly legacy of giving back to the community,” spokeswoman Carole Puls said.
Working in morning and afternoon shifts, the employees will take on about 60 projects.
Keep Indianapolis Beautiful Inc., a local affiliate of the national not-for-profit Keep America Beautiful, helped Lilly identify the projects. Some 50 organizations, including United Way of Central Indiana and Boy Scouts of America, helped organize the projects.
Indianapolis isn’t the only location for the event. Lilly workers at locations elsewhere in the world will tackle their own projects.
In China, workers will walk the Great Wall to raise money for tuberculosis relief, and in Turkey, plant trees in a reforestation project.
