Indiana Business College is expanding outside the state for the first time in its 106-year history.

The company plans to open a $2 million campus in Columbus, Ohio, in September 2009. The 15,000-square-foot facility will be built by Indianapolis developer Browning Investments and leased to the college.

A site will be chosen from two potential locations in undisclosed suburbs, said spokesman Marc Konesco. It will have capacity for 500 students and an additional 500 students who take a course at the location and the balance online.

Columbus was chosen because the demographics are similar to Indianapolis, and the market was under-served, he said. Traditionally having trained secretaries, the college has branched into health care, culinary arts and other areas.

Indiana Business College has a dozen campuses in Indiana.

The college was acquired in 1986 by Educational Management Corp., which is majority-owned by a family outside Indiana and the Konesco family.
