South Bend Chocolate Co. is set to open one of its Chocolate Cafes in the Arts & Design District in Carmel.

The store will open "soon" at 45 W. Main Street in a space that formerly housed a tattoo parlor and a convenience store.

The company has posted signs in the window of the storefront announcing the new location, but hasn't announced an exact opening date.

Currently, South Bend Chocolate operates an Indianapolis location on Monument Circle downtown. Another location at Indianapolis International Airport operated by a third-party vendor is scheduled to close sometime before the end of 2021 as part of the airport's Concessions Refresh program.

South Bend Chocolate Co. was founded by Mark Tanner in South Bend in 1991. The company got its start making chocolates under a license from the University of Notre Dame. Its first three chocolates were the Domer, the Rockne, and Nuts for Notre Dame, its website states. It now makes more than 500 different chocolates and sweets.

Since then, the company has grown to 11 company-owned stores and four franchised locations in Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.

South Bend Chocolate's downtown Indianapolis store opened in 3,000 square feet in 2001 in the Guaranty Building. The store won a chocolate war against next-door neighbor Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, which closed in 2005. South Bend Chocolate took over the vacant space and opened Indy Swirl, a frozen yogurt shop.
