One of the internal candidates to replace Community Health Network CEO Bill Corley has resigned to take a new job.

Mark Dixon will leave Community on Nov. 14, the Indianapolis not-for-profit hospital organization announced yesterday. Dixon essentially was the No. 2 officer at Community, overseeing its three Indianapolis hospitals.

Dixon, who joined Community Health Network in 2003, will become southwest region president for Fairview Health Services, headquartered in Minneapolis. The move will put Dixon in closer proximity to members of his family.

Mike Blanchet, president of Community Hospital South, will replace Dixon on an interim basis beginning Nov. 17.

“I don’t think it says really anything negative about Community. It just means they have one less good candidate,” said Ed Abel, director of health care at Blue & Co., an Indianapolis accounting firm. “They still have an internal candidate who is very strong,” Abel added. “They also are looking outside of their internal candidates.”

Corley, who has been CEO of Community since 1984, announced in June that he would retire at the end of 2009.

Community is the third-largest hospital system based in Indianapolis, behind Clarian Health and St. Vincent Health.
