IU Health hires another 13 neurosurgeons from Goodman Campbell

Indiana University Health Physicians has hired another 13 neurosurgeons from Goodman Campbell Brain and Spine, a large independent surgical group, in the latest move to build up its own neurosurgical team.

The two sides jointly announced the move Thursday afternoon, saying they have concluded negotiations over their relationship and have agreed to provide neurosurgical services as separate organizations.

The agreement marks a significant turning point in the relationship between the two organizations. For the past nine years, they have working together through an agreement under which Goodman Campbell physicians performed a wide variety of brain and spine surgeries at all of IU Health’s neurosurgery departments across the state. Goodman Campbell surgeons also staffed the neurosurgery department at the IU School of Medicine.

Now, with that agreement about expire in December, IU Health and the medical school will bring much of their neurosurgery functions in-house. IU Health Physicians is a joint venture between the health system and the medical school, and has been pushing hard in recent months to build up its own neurosurgery team.

Goodman Campbell surgeons will continue to have admitting privileges at IU Health facilities.

The hiring of 13 surgeons from Goodman Campbell brings to a total of 18 that IU Health Physicians have hired from the Indianapolis-based Goodman Campbell group. Several weeks ago, IU Health Physicians announced it had hired five pediatric neurosurgeons from Goodman Campbell to work at Riley Hospital for Children.

Goodman Campbell, based at 355 W. 16th St.,  will continue to operate as an independent practice providing care for adult and pediatric patients. It also plans to open an office in Carmel this summer.

Goodman Campbell, with several dozen surgeons, was founded in 2010 through the merger of the Indianapolis Neurosurgical Group and the Indiana University Department of Neurological Surgery.
