As the youngest principal at one of the largest public affairs and lobbying firms in Indiana, Miller is at the forefront of connecting businesses, not-for-profits and other groups to government.
Age: 38
Birthplace/hometown: Baltimore, Maryland/White Hall, Maryland
Family: wife, Maggie; children, Kathryn, 5; Jonathan, 3; and infant Alexander
Education: bachelor’s in social sciences, Frostburg State University
Years with company: 16
Getting here: A chance meeting in a Georgetown bar led to an offer to work for then-House Democratic Speaker John Gregg. Miller packed up his car and headed to Indiana, where he soon found himself doing campaign work for a Dearborn County House race. “I didn’t really have a plan after that,” he said, but he hit it off with Ed Treacy, who was helping Gregg with campaigns, and was soon hired as a public affairs assistant.
Major company achievements during his tenure: Miller was the first employee hired after the merger of Bose McKinney & Evans and Ed Treacy and Associates. “Over the course of that time, the firm grew from a small boutique lobbying firm into a multifaceted full-service public affairs firm.”
Transitional professional moment: During his junior year, Miller was appointed to the University System of Maryland Board of Regents by Maryland Gov. Parris Glendening. “I was focused on study for a career as a high school history teacher but, during my time on the board, I learned that politics and government were my calling.”
Recent business challenge: “A few years ago, a longtime friend and colleague left the firm to join another firm. I considered him my partner and we shared most of our client work for almost 10 years. It was hard to accept, but I wished him well and we remain friends to this day. The move forced me to reinvent myself and my approach to government relations.”
Givebacks: Miller serves on the board of the Indiana Fiscal Policy Institute and is a volunteer with Best Buddies and Junior Achievement of Central Indiana.•
