8 thoughts on “Bills reducing early-voting period, closing primaries head to Senate floor

  1. Why are the taxpayers of the state paying for political party primary elections anyway? If the purpose of the “closed” primary proposal is to shut out the independents, then the parties should just slate candidates in party conventions and save the cost of primary elections.

The parties already nominate certain candidates in state conventions (AG, SoS, Lt. Gov., other minor state offices).

    1. What I’m trying to say is that I don’t identify with either party, so I have voted in both parties’ primaries in the past, sometimes to vote against an objectionable candidate and sometimes to vote for one whom I think is in danger of being “primaried” by an extremist.

It hasn’t made a difference…we still get the extremes.

  2. In last year’s general election, I voted at one of the early voting places as did many other senior citizens. There was a consensus among us that those who arrived with walkers, in wheelchairs, with canes, or who look frail would be given the courtesy of moving to the head of the line. The result was that for many seniors, it drastically reduced the time to stand in line and to vote.

  3. With Indiana’s gerrymandering in place, the Primary is the only election where a vote counts. After the primary the general election is a forgone conclusion in almost all Indiana districts.

The primary system should be scrapped and a ranked choice voting should be implemented. We would start to see more reasonable candidates rise to the top.

  4. When we want more citizen involvement, shortening the early vote is NOT the answer. Every early vote facility was packed during last election. And was much easier for elderly and handicap people
Let’s think what is BEST for our citizens and their participation in electing our leaders.

  5. All of the above is a way to continue to ensure that Republicans hold a super majority and we are faced with right wing leadership all down the line. Why is Indiana’s voter participation rate among the lowest in the nation? Could it be most Hoosiers feel they don’t really have a say in who is elected because no matter what its going to be all republican all the time? Take gerrymandering away from the parties, institute term limits, stop allowing straight ticket voting, and maybe, just maybe we might have more representative government.
