To expand on this: I go to Mass Ave with the intention of window shopping stores like Chatham Home. Carmel does not have anywhere near the same kind of window shopping draw, and Chatham Home by itself does not make the trip worth it.
Agree Robert. I wish them well in carmel and am saddened to see them leave downtown. I will say that block of downtown could be developed more as is quiet in comparison to rest of Avenue. Wish they could have found space in more trafficked area (ie bottleworks) as will be difficult to make it to carmel as downtown resident.
Bummer, but not surprising. Mass Ave/downtown in general isn’t what it had become prior to the Pandemic. As a long term resident, its far too quiet down here on weekdays. Not having 150k people working down here every day changed things.
Kuddos and best of luck to Felders. They did a great job restoring that building and have been wonderful neighbors and contributors to the area. Chatham Home was a great business that will be sorely missed.
Mass Ave and Downtown generally are lacking what is really needed to maintain a consistently active neighborhood: A dense residential base. Dveeloping a land use policy focused on incentivising infilling the parking lots along Mass Ave and throughout Downtown with apartments and condos should be a priority for the City.
well, just think about all the state and federal workers you’re about to have returning to their offices downtown. Maybe that will help increase shopping traffic.
Since I imagine most government workers’ remote work was on hybrid plans with only 2 days or so away from the office each week, they’ve already been downtown, so there’s not really much of a return to fuel new business.
A huge loss for downtown. As a near-downtown resident who is passionate about living and working downtown, anytime I see a business close and relocate to the ‘burbs, it’s like a gut-punch. The best way to improve this area is to keep resources here. I understand what they’re saying and I know small businesses have it hard, but I wish they could’ve found a place downtown that was more visible.
