And so it goes that nothing will change, that Indiana’s many problems will persist or even worsen because there is no counter-balancing pressure to do anything different. Where more than a century ago Daniel Burnham urged Chicagoans to “make no small plans…aim high in hope and work” we in Indiana make little (if any) plans because we value low taxes, huge rainy day surpluses, and stellar credit ratings over better public education, health care, roads and highways, more opportunities for equitable prosperity. Ask any of the members of the GOP supermajority in the legislature what they want their state to look like in 5 or 10 or more years and you’re likely to be met with a blank stare. There is no plan to pursue. There are no goals, no strategy, no deadlines. The status quo, as sad as it is, seems to suit the Republicans in the state legislature just fine.
They don’t want the status quo. The whole Republican platform is lowering taxes, which has a tendency to force reductions in state services like road quality, road funding for cities, K-12 and post-secondary education funding, environmental oversight of contaminated sites and contaminating businesses, etc., while attracting more mediocre jobs in warehouses.
I think I counted that either 44 or 46 of the 100 state house races had only one name on the ballot. If we didn’t have straight ticket voting as an option, I wonder how many votes those candidates would get. I rarely ever vote for an unopposed candidate. It’s pretty sad that almost half of Hoosiers had no choice on the ballot for state representative. How about an independent commission with the goal of drawing maps to make districts as competitive as possible?
