12 thoughts on “State’s proposed budget could cost Indiana Historical Society its building”
Brilliant maneuver by the Governor and Legislature: create an obligation for the taxpayers to buy a $33+ million building to avoid $1 million in annual expenditure.
Did they teach that at Harvard Business School?
But it can be sold as “winning”. Being ignorant of the details is bliss.
A correction to the article: the Indiana Historical Society occupied space within the Indiana State Library building, not alongside it.
That makes the close relationship with the state much more clear. Thanks.
The State can afford to support this facility. Seriously!!!
It provides a significant portion of the historical record for Indiana–the State Museum curates the physical history primarily and the History Center curates and documents the written history, while providing an excellent venue to celebrate our State. With the new Archives Building opening across the Canal perhaps some legislators feel that they no longer need to honor this arrangement but again, all of these three institutions are critical in telling the story of our State. If we can’t pass up the chance to have an MLS team. then we should not pass up the chance to adequately document, preserve and share our history. We have an obligation to preserve the record of who we have been and are today.
First, I can’t believe Greg Porter is trying to turn this private nonprofit facility into a racial issue. Really Greg, that’s how you see it? This society was established for all people of all races and religions who helped found and build the state.
Second, maybe the Society should expand their fund raising to a broader population. In this city $1M a year is fairly easy if they try.
Third, sell the whole thing to the State Museum, and let the museum manage and run it. It’s easier to fund the State Museum than a private nonprofit.
I think Greg just pointed out what brought the group into the MAGA anti-DEI crosshairs.
Would be a big blunder not to maintain this beautiful museum and building. Do better, Indiana.
I don’t understand if the State signed a contract and said they would agree to the maintenance cost how they can go back on that contract they’ve signed? Maybe let the IHS assume maintenance and everything related to their building?
The KKK came to power in the 1920s, not the 1930s.
This story describes the details of the land lease and the building contract/lease in a very confusing way. As I understand it, if the state budget does not provide for maintenance and upkeep, the building lease with IHS is cancelled. If the IHS wants to pursue purchase of the building, each party will have an independent appraisal made to determine fair market value. What is unknown is whether this appraisal includes the parcel the building sits upon.
The Indiana Historical Society is a public corporation, established by state law (IC 23-6-3). The enabling legislation permits the Society, and the state’s Office of General Administration, on its behalf, to establish trusts, and to accept grants and gifts as appropriate. This may be a source of confusion for the Society being a nonprofit operating independently and as a tenant of state owned property.
Because the land and the building that is currently occupied by the Society are owned by the state, the state is not obliged to purchase the building at the termination of the lease.
As a taxpayer, I appreciate the Governor’s unwillingness to spend $1.1 Mil annually to maintain a property that is not only in close proximity to, but has a mission and objectives that are synergistic to both the Indiana State Library’s Historical Division and the Indiana State Museum. Co-locating the Society’s collections and operations at one or both of these locations seems achievable.
To be honest, if the intent was to house the Indiana Historical Society in this facility, with maintenance being funded by taxpayers, the design is too elaborate, and the size is excessive. I know business functions, wedding receptions, etc. are held there. Who receives the income from these events? Does this revenue help to offset the maintenance expense? Or, does the revenue from these events enrich the Society while the taxpayer holds the bag on maintenance?
The question going forward is not only where is the Society’s new home, but what does their future look like?
