Attaching a candidate’s political affiliation to their name on the ballot more often than not leads to straight party voting.
In a state like Indiana where Republicans have a super-majority hold on the state government (and all but a handful of cities), being able to see at a simple glance in the voting booth who the Republican candidates are will lead to less research and knowledge about all the candidates.
If Republicans are genuinely concerned about voters’ lack knowledge, they should consider the Oregon approach whereby the local government publishes and mails to all registered voters a pamphlet containing information on each candidate and an overview of their positions on the issues (the content is submitted by the candidates).
After getting such a mailing, no candidates or voters can claim they didn’t have the information to know who was who or where they stood on the issues.
I agree. The straight vote is what concerns me. I don’t care about your affiliation as I can research that. Its straight vote that will elect unqualified candidates, just like we do with government officials. This particular is about our kids education, so should be a separate procedure.
It is ironic that Ferchmin complains about Wheeler and Shapiro not claiming party affiliation. It has previously been reported that Ferchmin and fellow candidate got funding from the Republican Party while Wheeler and Shapiro got none from any party. Major sour grapes.
