Clarian blazes trail with transplants, but some question its zeal

May 19, 2008

Clarian Health this decade has transformed its transplant program into one of the busiest in the country. Its team of surgeons
takes calls around the clock if a viable organ becomes available. They will hop on a charter plane to check out an organ other
doctors don’t want.

Small Towns, Big Business

May 12, 2008

Small Towns, Big Business Hospitals mixed bag for rural economies WILLIAMSPORT-To see the economic impact hospitals have on Indiana, this town of 1,900-which boasts its county’s only stoplight-provides a good view. The 16-bed St. Vincent Williamsport Hospital is the fourthlargest employer in Warren County, where Williamsport is the seat, and pays wages that are 60 […]

Hospitals are mixed bag for rural economies

May 12, 2008

Around Indiana, hospitals continue to grow and add workers, increasing their role as an economic driver to the state’s economy.
But health care reformers say hospital growth has a double edge, as higher health care costs dampen growth prospects for other
Indiana employers and their workers.

Firm helps clients blog easier: Compendium sees huge market in making business Web sites more interactive

May 12, 2008

The number of blogs operating on the Internet outnumbers the inhabitants of California, New York, Texas and Florida combined. With a market like that, it’s no wonder Chris Baggott and Ali Sales are so excited about the potential of Compendium Blogware, an upstart firm the two formed in January 2007. Baggott is best known for founding, along with co-owner Scott Dorsey, fastgrowing local e-mail marketing firm ExactTarget Inc. in 2000. The company brought in $48 million in revenue last year….

Market Tower owners put it up for bid despite tough market

April 21, 2008

The owners of Market Tower–the city’s fourth-tallest skyscraper–tried to sell the 31-story building this month but apparently
were unable to generate bids that met expectations. The timing of the sale–at a point when financing large deals is difficult–suggests
the owners may be eager to unload the asset.

A life of hard work, from the farm to the House: Thompson, who has three business degrees, wants to give boost to economically disadvantaged counties

April 21, 2008

Nearly 30 years ago, former State Sen. Katie Wolf appeared at a “women in politics” conference in Gary. Afterward, Jill Long Thompson, then 25, marched up and asked for advice. Thompson had her sights set on joining the Valparaiso City Council. Wolf offered her phone number. She soon found Thompson waiting on her doorstep, bursting with questions about how a female Democrat should campaign in a conservative, rural area. “What struck me was her determination to win,” Wolf remembered. “After…

Commentary: Israel through the eyes of a visitor

April 7, 2008

My wife, Janie, and I made some new friends on our recent trip to Israel, including Moira Carlstedt, president of the Indianapolis Neighborhood Housing Partnership. I happily cede my space this week for her observations of the trip. It is like any hospital room in Indianapolis-except you can see the Lebanese border from the window, and you stand amid damage from a Hezbollah rocket that tore through that window. And then you understand the need for the underground hospital that…

Super Bowl bid committee solicits input through Web site

April 7, 2008

The city’s 2012 Super Bowl bid committee set up a Web site, www.our2012sb.com, in mid-February to encourage input from the
community–adopting a more inclusive approach than organizers did last year when bidding on the 2011 game.

Credit-market turmoil casts uncertainty over ITT Educational Services

March 24, 2008

ITT Educational Services Inc. and other for-profit schools are facing a maelstrom of financial threats that analysts say could
hurt student recruiting and profit margins–and already has driven stock prices down sharply. ITT shares are off 61 percent
since hitting an all-time high of $131.82 in November.

Indy beverage acquirer scores first purchase: Taliera drinks up Texas maker of Bloody Mary mix

March 24, 2008

It took a year and a half. But Indianapolis-based Taliera Holdings LLC finally acquired its first beverage brand. Taliera, led by Indianapolis entrepreneur J. Smoke Wallin, acquired Texasbased Red Eye Brands this month. The company makes Red Eye Bloody Mary mix, as well as salsas and sauces. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. But Wallin said Red Eye holds less than 5 percent of the Bloody Mary mix market. He hopes to take the company to 10 percent three…

ECONOMIC ANALYSIS: Financial services sector unfair in attacking Fed chief

March 17, 2008

The Federal Reserve’s Ben Bernanke has come under a lot of glib criticism from the financial-services sector. Generally, Wall Street types are unhappy because they think he should have addressed the subprime crisis with a greater sense of urgency. The truly bizarre rant by Jim Cramer on “Mad Money” has morphed into lower-level critiques of Bernanke’s experience and judgment appearing in columns and trade journals. But is this characterization fair or even correct? I think not, and here’s why. The…

Oprah’s beau advises struggling Pacers on image management

March 10, 2008

Best-selling author Stedman Graham says professional athletes should think of themselves as “a corporation unto themselves.”
Graham–perhaps best known as television star Oprah Winfrey’s boyfriend–brought that message to the Indiana Pacers during
a three-hour private seminar in late January designed to get the players to rethink the importance of their individual images.

STATEHOUSE DISPATCH: Thorny tax issues remain as scheduled adjournment nears

March 10, 2008

The closer we get to March 14, the date the 2008 legislative session is scheduled to end, the less optimistic people seem to be about reaching agreement on a property tax relief and reform package that will attract sufficient bipartisan support and be structured in a way that meets the requirements of Gov. Mitch Daniels for his signature. The biggest problems in private legislative negotiations appear to revolve around how to fund local government and school shortfalls, as well as…

Open-wheel reunion creating more business opportunities

March 3, 2008

In the end, the catastrophic sponsorship shift from open-wheel racing to NASCAR became too much to ignore, driving the long-divided
sides of Champ Car and the Indy Racing League back into a unified series.

Memory Gardens lawsuit seeks $20 million

February 11, 2008

An Indianapolis law firm has filed a class-action suit seeking more than $20 million from a pair of financial-services firms
it says facilitated the transactions that allowed a New Jersey couple to plunder cemetery trust funds. Cohen & Malad LLP filed
the lawsuit late last month on behalf of thousands of customers of Indianapolis-based Memory Gardens Management Corp., which
owns Memory Gardens in Greenwood, Lincoln Memory Gardens in Boone County and other cemeteries. The defendants are the company,
New York-based…

February 4, 2008

Three months after launching an initiative to boost drug-development firms in Indiana, officials at BioCrossroads have written
a report that attempts to show in detail the vast market opportunity they see.

Are unions making a comeback?

January 29, 2008

Weâ??re accustomed to hearing that unions represent a smaller and smaller proportion of the American work force.

Yet, government figures released last week show the first increase in union membership in 24 years, with
about 12.1 percent of workers in unions….

Financial troubles mount for local developer: Memo: Unpaid contractors are demanding payment

January 28, 2008

Premier Properties USA Inc. is scrambling to keep up with bills for basic services including snow removal, security and interior design-more signs of financial troubles for the developer of Metropolis in Plainfield and the proposed Venu project in Indianapolis. The local firm is facing liens of more than $3.5 million for unpaid work on its Plainfield retail properties, and an internal e-mail obtained by IBJ suggests Premier’s problems don’t stop there. The e-mail, from Premier executive Mike Diamantides, says pressure…

Not-for-profits lack solid IT foundation, study says: NPower Indiana says most groups fail to meet basics

January 14, 2008

A new study suggests a large percentage of the region’s not-for-profits still struggle with inadequate technology that undermines productivity, invites security breaches and hinders their community outreach potential. NPower Indiana, a not-for-profit that provides low-cost technology consulting and services in central Indiana, studied 34 local not-for-profits under a grant from Verizon Foundation and Anthem Foundation. It found that 85 percent are “constrained by outdated PCs or operating systems, which can seriously affect their system’s stability, efficiency and ability to run…

Running Co. takes aim at sporting-goods giants

January 7, 2008

Retired Olympic distance runner Bob Kennedy and his business partner, Ashley Johnson, have expanded their Running Co. to four
stores. The most recent expansion is their boldest yet, pitting them against mall giants Dick’s Sporting Goods, The Finish
Line and Foot Locker for supremacy among south-side runners and walkers.
