Good for city staff! The right development doesn’t come easy or without taking a stand for what is best for the local community and the infrastructure that supports it.
Raising the getto that Devington has created would be the very best first step.
Or razing?
Isn’t there a grocery store right around 38th and Arlington as well as a huge eskenazi clinic wellness center? Everything the community is wanting is going to require lots and lots of money for upkeep and I don’t think this investment company is in it to spend money and not make any. That’s the reason they want to do a hotel and apartments. I would hope the apartments would be market rate and completely fenced with gated access along with a component of senior living.
Yes, though the 38th and Arlington grocery is the one funded by Cook as part of its investment on 38th St. and it is apparently not doing well. There is also a Walmart Neighborhood Market at 56th and Emerson, and a Sav-a-Lot near Franklin and Pendleton. And the site is about halfway in between YMCA “health and wellness” facilities at 39th and Rural and 59th and Lee Road.
Tune up the Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”.
In all likelihood this company simply wants to build a massive, cheap, low-amenity apartment complex and nothing else. The east side has plenty of those.
+1. And ask for some type of housing credit or subsidy from the city.
Since when does the city planning office have scruples?
The original plan was fine. A grocery store is unrealistic. The density and investment that this project would bring could be a vital hedge against problems looming in Lawrence that – if realized – could easily spill over into the east side of Indianapolis.
New leaders in Lawrence are seemingly mismanaging finances; Ivy Tech is closing and needs to be proactively redeveloped; any federal job cuts at Emmett J. Bean Federal Center under this reckless presidential administration would be devastating.
Approve the project. NIMBYs need to learn how to save themselves.
There is a housing shortage yet we fight the development of housing. Large scale retail just isn’t going to happen; the market won’t support it.
There was a reason the Kroger that was located there closed.
+1
Crime, shoplifting, unreliable workforce, it is a trend that dooms any retail area and neighborhood. Why oh why are there “food desserts”? That’s why. Devington was a viable retail community and retail center — my family grew up there. Anything would be an improvement to what exists now, but it also takes a village — residents and leaders who take responsibility for themselves, their neighbors, and the community at-large. Good Lord, anything is preferable to what’s there now — why this squabbling if there’s an entity willing to take it on and sees possibilities?
