Duke Realty Corp., the developer of the mixed-use Anson in Boone County, has chosen Hansen & Horn Group Inc. to build single-family houses in the project.

Locally based Hansen & Horn replaces Los Angeles-based KB Home Inc., which backed out of plans to build in Anson when it exited the Indiana market in July 2007.

Hansen & Horn anticipates building 168 houses priced at $180,000 and above in a first phase. Additional phases could result in a total of 680 houses.

Elsewhere in Anson, Ryland Homes is building apartments and Flaherty & Collins Properties is focusing on apartments and lofts. A different, as-yet-undisclosed builder will construct “executive” houses, Duke spokesman Joel Reuter said.

Hansen & Horn sidestepped much of the carnage in last year’s housing bust by abandoning the tract-housing market and shifting upscale with designs featuring varying rooflines, better-quality materials and bold colors.

In Anson, the company plans to build houses based on craftsman, early American, colonial, Eastern Seaboard and Italianate styles.
