Lilly Endowment will give the Indiana Historical Society $2 million for two new exhibits scheduled to open downtown on March 20, 2010.

Dubbed the "Indiana Experience," the exhibits represent the first ticketed tourist attraction at the society’s headquarters building on the downtown canal in Indianapolis. The new attraction is part of a $17 million renovation at the organization’s headquarters, the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center, at 450 W. Ohio St.

John Herbst, Historical Society president and CEO, said the Lilly gift "brings us into the homestretch of the campaign for the "Indiana Experience." With the Lilly grant, the society has raised $14.4 million.

The renovations are part of a larger, five-year campaign to raise $23.8 million.

The Lilly grant will cover the bulk of the cost of the two exhibits, a combined $3.3 million. The society will split the money between the "Indiana Experience," which features live historical interpreters, and "Destination Indiana," a high-tech tour of the state based on the society’s digitized photo archive.
