Hill-Rom Holdings Inc. has hired a new CEO to place Peter Soderberg, who is retiring, the company announced Thursday.

John J. Greisch, 54, will start his new job on Friday. He comes to the Batesville-based hospital bed maker from Baxter International Inc., the global health care products company based in Deerfield, Ill. In his seven years there, Greisch served as president of its bioscience division, chief financial officer and then president of international operations.

Under Greisch, Baxter pushed into new markets in Asia, the middle East, Russia and Eastern Europe, doubling international sales and profits.

“With his proven leadership and successful track record, John will help us capitalize on Hill-Rom’s market-leading position and global expansion opportunities that will drive future growth,” said Rolf A. Classon, chairman of Hill-Rom’s board of directors, in a statement.

Soderberg became CEO of Hillenbrand Inc. four years ago, and then led the separation of the company’s two divisions, Hill-Rom and the Batesville Casket Co. He will continue to advise the company part-time on product and service-innovation initiatives. Soderberg has stepped down from the company’s board and Greisch will replace him.

Greisch holds a degree in business administration from Ohio’s Miami University and a master’s degree in management from Northwestern University’s J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management.
