The House Public Policy Committee plans to take up the bill Wednesday. It would make it a Class C infraction with
a possible fine of $500 to send text messages or e-mails while driving.
Bans on texting while driving went into
effect earlier this month in New Hampshire, Oregon and Illinois. The Governors Highway Safety Association says that made it
19 states that have outlawed the practice.
The U.S. Transportation Department said Tuesday it is prohibiting truck
and bus drivers from sending text messages on hand-held devices while operating commercial vehicles.
