Loehrer replaces Dr. Stephen D. Williams, the center’s founding director, who died of cancer in February 2009.
Pending approval by IU’s trustees, Loehrer also will serve as the IU School of Medicine’s associate dean for cancer research and hold the title HH Gregg Professor of Oncology.
Loehrer, who joined the IU faculty in 1990, focuses his research and care on testicular cancer, gastrointestinal cancer and thymoma. He has been deputy director of the IU Simon Cancer Center since 2006.
The Simon Cancer Center has more than 220 physicians and researchers in Indianapolis working to find better ways to prevent, detect and treat cancer. The center is best known for its advances in treatments for breast and testicular cancers.
Loehrer earned his medical degree from Rush Medical College in Chicago in 1978. He and his wife Deborah reside in Indianapolis. They have three adult children.
