First, I completely agree with [Mickey Maurer’s Feb. 22 column] regarding eliminating the township offices, and frankly
am amazed that lawmakers shamelessly defend these offices.
Having said that, it is still unfair to contrast the $1.32 that the townships spend to give away a dollar, with the United
Way spending 16 cents. As I understand it, the townships are giving poor relief directly to individuals and families. United
Way gives their money to agencies. Your article does not tell us how much these agencies are spending administratively, which
should be added to the 16 cents spent by United Way.
