State officials say local governments saved more than $8 million this winter purchasing road salt through a state volume-buying
program.
The Indiana Departments of Administration and Transportation asked local governments to commit to buying certain amounts
of salt for the winter season now ending. State procurement officials then leveraged the combined order into lower, guaranteed
prices for 160 local government units.
They say local governments paid on average $60 per ton of salt this winter. That was down from more than $103 per ton on
average a year ago.
Local communities now have March 22 through April 9 to submit orders for next winter. The state then will ask suppliers to
submit their lowest bids.
