A Michigan-based steel company with plants in Indianapolis and Fort Wayne has reached a settlement with federal regulators
over hazardous chemical reporting violations.
Under its settlement, Alro Steel Corp. has paid a $120,000 fine to settle its reporting violations with the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency.
The EPA had accused the Jackson, Mich.-based company of failing to notify state and local authorities of hazardous chemicals
it was storing at four plant locations, including hydrogen, acrylic enamels, propane and acetylene.
Federal law requires that state and local authorities be notified of hazardous chemicals stored on site so that in a fire
or emergency responders know what they are dealing with.
The violations occurred at the two Indiana facilities and plants in Lansing, Mich., and Melrose Park, Ill.
