Navistar Inc. has notified state leaders that its Indianapolis Casting Corp. foundry at 5565 Brookville Road will close in
July, costing about 220 employees their jobs.
The foundry had been slated to close last summer along with the Illinois-based company's east-side engine plant, but
the permanent shutdown was delayed. In the notice filed with the Indiana Department of Workforce Development on Tuesday, ICC
said business conditions led to the decision.
When the closing was first announced in January 2009, the foundry employed
about 500. The company said the July closure will affect 219 active employees and another 196 who are classified as inactive.
The engine plant closure was expected after Navistar agreed to stop making diesel engines for Ford Motor Co, its only customer.
But ICC also made engine blocks for other customers, buying it more time.
