Regenstrief Institute
The Indiana Pandemic Information Collaborative, which is led by Dr. Peter Embi, Regenstrief Institute president and CEO, is a group of more than 70 representatives from government, health care systems, universities, bioscience companies and not-for-profit organizations across Indiana. The collaborative pooled resources to address the COVID crisis and spurred the creation of the Regenstrief COVID-19 dashboards.
The dashboards have been used throughout the pandemic to provide important data not only to health and government leaders but also to everyday Hoosiers. The dashboards were created by a group of life sciences experts at Regenstrief and provide, in an easy-to-comprehend display, information about how the virus is spreading.
That data—which includes positive tests, hospital and intensive care unit admissions, deaths and more—is collected securely from about 600 sources throughout the state, including hospitals, laboratories and medical offices. The dashboard has two versions, one for the public and one for use by state and local health departments.
The data presented to state and local health departments is more in-depth, which has allowed health care leaders to identify emerging outbreaks and take action to impose restrictions when needed. One of those outbreaks was at the Tyson Foods plant in Cass County in April 2020 when tests confirmed positive cases in a large group of employees, forcing the plant to close.
“The dashboards have proven to be highly informative,” the nomination reads. “The agile and flexible presentation has helped our state leverage resources, helped keep hospitals from being overwhelmed and ultimately provided the needed perspective to make policy decisions to protect Hoosiers.”•
