Manager of Corporate Engagement, United Way of Central Indiana

As a manager of corporate engagement at United Way of Central Indiana, Vivien Carter manages about a dozen of the organization’s corporate accounts and a portfolio of individual donors, and does new-business prospecting. She started with United Way as a seasonal employee after leaving a career in property management and, within a week, “fell in love with the environment, mission and vision.” After about nine months, she was offered a full-time fundraising position. A year later, she was promoted to her current position.

Proudest moment in your career? Following George Floyd’s death in 2020, United Way of Central Indiana developed a nine-part virtual learning series to educate the public and encourage conversations about the history of racial injustice. Carter led the episode on social capital and civic engagement.

What have you learned about yourself since you joined the workforce? The true meaning of success. Success, she says, quoting Maya Angelou, “is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.”

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? “Gaining more education to better myself and [my] community. I also envision myself in an executive leadership position, having a broader impact in central Indiana.”

Favorite social media platform: Instagram

 Favorite podcast: “Gettin’ Grown”

Netflix recommendations: “High On the Hog,” “The Lincoln Lawyer” and “Bridgerton”

Go-to coffee order: Caramel macchiato. “However, I recently discovered Provider, and their butterscotch latte is absolutely delicious.”
