Inui, who has led the medical research institute since 2002, will remain a Regenstrief rersearcher focused on global health issues.
Tierney, 59, has spent his entire 30-year career at Regenstrief, which developed one of the nation’s first electronic medical record systems and maintains 35 years of patient data from that system.
The Regenstrief database lies behind the Indiana Health Information Exchange, an Indianapolis-based not-for-profit group, which facilitates the swapping of patient records between central Indiana hospitals. It is now trying to expand such record exchanges statewide.
Like most Regenstrief researchers, Dr. Tierney also teaches as the Indiana University School of Medicine and sees patients for Wishard Health Services, where he also acts as chief of medicine.
Tierney also led a team in developing an open-source medical resource system for AIDS clinics IU operates in Kenya. That system, called OpenMRS, is now being used widely in developing nations.
As part of his promotion, the IU School of Medicine has also named Tierney associate dean of clinical effectiveness research, a new position. The appointment still requires the approval of the IU trustees.
In a statement, Tierney said, “Building upon the 35 years of data of the Regenstrief Medical Record System and decades of groundbreaking health services and aging research, the Institute has an enormous opportunity to lead a revolution in healthcare systems and delivery of health care both in the United States and globally.”
