A central Indiana Chrysler transmission plant's 300 new job openings drew 10 times that number of applications — a response a union official says reflects the large number of people out of work.

United Auto Workers Local 685 President Rich Boruff said Tuesday the 3,000 applications for the Kokomo plant's 300 positions is a good thing, but also a sad reminder that many people are out of work.

Chrysler spokeswoman Jodi Tinson said it's not uncommon for the automaker to get a big response to job openings. The new jobs with Kokomo's largest employer were created in part by the introduction of the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The job growth is part of Chrysler's effort to rebound from bankruptcy.
