Muncie's mayor says 25 laid-off firefighters will soon be back on the job after the city reached a deal to provide fire
protection for some areas outside the city limits.
Mayor Sharon McShurley signed the 10-year agreement under which Center Township will pay the city $400,000 a year for fire
protection. Township Trustee Marilyn Kay Walker said consolidating into one fire department will save money.
McShurley was concerned last week that delays in negotiations with the township would prevent the city from spending a $3.5
million federal grant and having money available to recall the firefighters.
The township fire department's 10 paid firefighters will lose their jobs.
