Lisa Freiman, director of contemporary art at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, has landed a prestigious role at the most-watched exhibition in her field, La Biennale di Venizia.

She will serve as commissioner of the U.S. Pavilion in Venice in 2011, presenting the Puerto Rican artist collaborative Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla. The IMA sponsored the team and wrote the proposal that resulted in Allora’s and Guillermo’s being chosen for the show.

Next year will be the IMA’s first time as a presenting sponsor at the competition, and only the second time since 1956 that a Midwest art museum’s proposal was chosen, spokeswoman Katie Zarich said.

The State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs announced its selection of the IMA and the artist team on Sept. 8.

“Allora & Calzadilla represent the diversity and vitality of contemporary American art,” said Freiman, who drafted the proposal to have the Puerto Rican collaborative represent the United States.

The museum’s design and installation crew will accompany Freiman to install the artists’ six multimedia works. The IMA is also organizing a trip for donors next June. The 54th Biennale runs June 4 to Nov. 27 next year.
