Financial terms of the deal were not released, but industry sources said the multiyear deal is valued at $1 million annually for the open-wheel race series.
Verizon’s motorsports marketing agency, Indianapolis-based Just Marketing International, helped put the deal together. Verizon will be designated the official wireless carrier of the series.
Verizon officials plan to launch an IndyCar application that has live timing and scoring from events; driver and team information; highlights; streaming audio and video of races; and social networking links. Verizon will continue to be a primary sponsor of Penske Racing.
The free IndyCar app initially will be available on BlackBerry and Android cell phone devices. Verizon plans to have numerous Indy Racing League-themed promotions at stores nationwide later this year and next year, company officials said.
